"The details are not the details. They make the design."

- Charles Eames

Craig is a user experience professional with more than ten years of experience in design, management, and organizational strategy.

Before founding Awasu Design, he co-founded Bolt | Peters, a user experience research firm based in San Francisco, where he now serves on the Board of Advisors. Craig has worked with a variety of well-known companies including Hallmark, Time Warner, Restoration Hardware, PeopleSoft, Blue Shield, KQED, EMC/Documentum, and Wells Fargo.

In an earlier life, Craig co-founded a middle-school program in the San Francisco Bay Area and taught in Detroit and Minneapolis. He credits his passion for business facilitation and coaching to his teaching career. He speaks at conferences on how enterprises can enable their user experience personnel to be more effective and make greater impact.

Craig can facilitate meetings and workshops in his sleep.

Craig loves learning things, over-delivering, hiking, basketball, opening champagne bottles, dancing at weddings, whiskey, laughing at work, road trips, hot tubs, hitting a heavy bag, punching friends in the face (with boxing gloves on), dipping french fries in chocolate shakes, mentoring, being mentored, drawing, shoveling snow, contemplating running a marathon, and fixing things.

"Making unusual connections is the basis of creativity."

- From Mind in the Making, by Ellen Galinsky

Hilary has been leading projects for over ten years and holds the design vision for all engagements.

Before Awasu Design, Hilary joined Goodby, Silverstein & Partners to help expand the interactive department, introducing user experience principles and usability best practices to the agency as it broadened its capabilities from traditional advertising to new media. While at Goodby, she helped lead the information architecture for clients like Hyundai USA, Sprint, and HP. She also ran the user experience design group at Kodak Gallery and sat on a panel of design leaders responsible for the Kodak-wide customer experience. Hilary has led large design projects at eBay Inc., The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), and Wolters Kluwer. She received a Bachelors degree in Computer Arts from the University of California, San Diego.

Hilary is in a beautiful long-term relationship with Photoshop, and together they have been through everything from serious design efforts to just-for-fun projects featuring photos of cats. She's a proud mom who loves when her daughter says "boobabies" (blueberries), and in her free time she creates one-of-a-kind necklaces that leave admirers wishing she'd switch to a full-time career in jewelry design. Despite having years of happy clients under her belt, she still blushes when she receives the latest letter of praise from a client extending their highest compliments.

"Always assume positive intent."

- Indra Nooyi, on the best advice she ever got

Courtney is a user experience designer with a communications background and a Stanford degree.

Courtney kicked off her career with three years in Japan and a year in Australia, where she wrote and edited for national magazines, governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations, small businesses, and more. Back in the US to stay, Courtney has extended her love of clean, logical structure from the written word to the user experience field as both experience designer and content strategist at Awasu Design.

Courtney is almost always hungry, loves the Grammar Girl podcast, follows the Chicago Manual of Style on Twitter, and dreams of winning Carl Kasell's voice on her home answering machine. She is a competitive swimmer cursed with a talent for long-distance swimming, which she recently discovered translates well to long-distance running. She excels at rounding out a happy day of hard work with a happy hour of cheap beers and a song or two at whichever karaoke stage has the shortest line.

"Good design is as little design as possible"

- Dieter Rams

Tino creates beautiful graphics and smooth animations to bring Awasu's designs to life.

Tino is a recent graduate of Academy of Art University, and he puts his degree in Web Design & New Media to good use at Awasu Design creating beautiful graphics and clever icons for all of our clients' visual design needs. Tino knew that he was destined for a career in art and design from the time he was in sixth grade, and he has been gathering experience and inspiration ever since, in his home country of Taiwan, at an international school in China, as an exchange student in Georgia, at community college in Seattle, and finally in San Francisco, where he hopes to stay for a while.

In Tino's spare time, he dabbles in motion graphics and enjoys spending money on horrible movies. He likes hanging out with friends, but he's equally happy having Tino-time, because that's how awesome he is. Someday when Tino is rich and famous he'll return home to Taiwan to show off his success to his friends, which hopefully will also include a sleek and slim physique, if he can manage to say no to Awasu's amazing snack table.

Sophia Dufort

Operations Manager

The Team

"Make it work."

- Tim Gunn

Sophia is the smiling face that manages office operations and keeps everyone happy.

Sophia is a born-and-raised San Franciscan who studied Theater and Motion Picture and Video at San Francisco School of the Arts High School before escaping the city for a try at the “country” life at California State University, Chico. She considers her most impressive undergraduate accomplishment to be convincing the Chair of the Music Department to accept her into the Recording Arts major despite no previous musical experience (other than a year of trombone in the third grade). She ended up finding her inspiration (and majority of credits) in the Art Department, however, and graduated with a degree in Art History.

Happily back in the city of San Francisco, Sophia is learning German and Samba, though not at the same time, and is the proud owner of The Bestest Dog in the Entire World, a Boston terrier/pug mix (a “bug,” if you will) named Zeppelin, who has the enviable talent of snoring even while awake. If you want to see Sophia's smiling face in person, you'd better stop by soon, before she begins studying for a Masters of Library Science and doesn't have enough time for us.
